Did he have the necessary "officer's authorization"? Don't know, but it was nowhere to be found when I bought the gun from his estate. As an officer, his belongings were not subject to search, though officers were required to certify that they possessed no "unauthorized items" at the point of embarcation (POE). My own MP-40 was brought home in the personal baggage of a US Army Field Artillery major who captured it in Normandy. Later, it looks like this policy was amended to allow just one war trophy firearm per service member, which could not be a machine gun.
